Who am I?
Am I a carpenter? Am I a businessman? Am I a husband? Am I a father? Am I a brother? Am I a son? Am I a grandson? Am I a friend? Am I a leader? Am I a blogger? Am I a podcaster? Am I a human? Perhaps I am none of these things. We are so much more than the words we use to define ourselves. What is one action you can take today that will have the most impact on your future?
Do that. Think long term. In the dictionary, regret is defined as “ a feeling of sadness, repentance, or disappointment over something that has happened or been done.”
If you have a regret, that means that you believe things would have been different if you had not done “x”. But how do you know that’s true? How can you be certain that things would not be worse than what they currently are? The reality is that it’s been done and there’s nothing you can do about it. Dwelling about it will not make it go away or make you feel better. Remove “regret” from your vocabulary. It’s not serving you. That being said, if you feel bad about something you did or something that happened, there may be a learning opportunity. Don’t ignore it. That may be a sign. Learn from it and be better tomorrow. Most people do work and want to be paid for their time which I understand and appreciate.
Unfortunately, as the owner of a business, it does not work like this. There can literally be years of work before the money starts to show up. In fact, there is often money that needs to be put into the business before it can start making money which then needs to be paid back. If you work for a new business, understand that money in the door does not mean money in the bank. If you plan on starting a business, understand that it's a long term investment. Both in time and in money. If done right though, it can be one of the most fulfilling experiences of your life. More importantly, if you want to stand the test of time, understand this: "Profit" does not equal money in the bank." Look for help, find mentors, ask lots of questions and find people who understand business. If you work for a new business, keep in mind that if they go out of business, so do you... Hustle and grind are words I hear often these days.
"In order to be successful you need to hustle and grind." But why? What does "hustle and grind" mean to the person who is saying this? Perhaps more importantly, what does "success" mean to the person who is saying this? Does a tree need to hustle and grind in order to accomplish what it's here for? No. As long as it has everything it needs it accomplishes everything with ease. Hustle and grind are words that feed our egos. It feels good when we tell somebody that we work from 5:00am to 11:00pm seven days a week. We're important because we're busy. What if hustling and grinding is actually slowing us down? If you could accomplish more by doing less, would you? I'm not saying not to go after your dreams. What I'm saying is that life should not feel like a struggle. Nature flows and life should be the same. Are there ups and downs? Yes. Just like seasons throughout a year, your life will have seasons. But you can make the most of all the seasons. Do you feel like you are being pulled towards something or does it feel like you are pushing a boulder up a hill? I challenge you (and myself) to replace the hustle and grind with flow and ease. P.S. If you are in Ottawa this evening, join us at Younion Meditation Studio for our One Year Celebration from 6-8pm. Come experience what flow and ease can feel like. Accept it. Whatever "it" is.
There's no point in fighting it. It happened. You can't change it. Be with it. Learn from it. Grow into it. Become it. Do anything other than fight it. The more your fight it, the stronger it will become. Use "it's" power to fuel your greatness! Our instinct can be just as good, if not better, than our long drawn out analysis. As Malcolm Gladwell writes in his book Blink: "The only way that human beings could have ever survived as a species for as long as we have is that we've developed another kind of decision-making apparatus that's capable of making very quick judgements based on very little information." I believe a lot of us have forgotten about this subconscious power. Our brains continue to develop and as they do we become less connected to the all-knowing within us. It's time to get reconnected. If you are in Ottawa and this resonates with you, I suggest you visit Younion Meditation Studio. This Wednesday is the One Year Anniversary Celebration. Trust your instincts... Did you notice that feeling you have?
Sit with it. Be with it. Accept it. That's it... Last month at the M1 event in Montreal, I went with the intention to find clarity.
At the event, Segev, a fellow M1 member, ran some amazing exercises which I touched on in the podcast episode Finding Your Tribe with Rock Thomas. If you listened to the episode, I make reference to writing "clarity" on a piece of paper for one of the exercises that Segev ran. That piece of paper was later handed to my partner, Corin, and she gave me hers. What I forgot to come back to in that episode was what we did with those pieces of paper. At the time we received the papers, we were told not to open them and, instead, just put them in our pockets. Towards the very end of the day, Segev spoke up and informed us that the way we would find the thing we were looking for (the word we wrote on the piece of paper) would be through the word that was given to us by our partner. When I went back to my room, I opened up the piece of paper and on it was the word connection. That means I would find clarity through connection. Up until tonight, I thought I was going to find clarity through creating deeper connections with other people. Although I still think that is true, absolute clarity will come through connection with the higher powers. Interestingly enough, that epiphany came through connecting with my beautiful and all-knowing wife. Thank you, sweetie. Do you have problems right now? Me to... But problems are a sign of life. If you don't have problems, you probably don't have much of a life... Which may be a problem... The only reason that businesses exist is because there are problems to solve. The only reason people make money is because they are solving problems. The only reason people get inspired is because they see a problem that needs to be solved. All that being said, if you do have "problems", what created the problems in the first place? More importantly, what was the mindset that created them? "Problems cannot be solved with the same mindset that created them." |
